Chapter Eleven

I climbed the stairs, slowed down by how stuffed I felt after lunch. I didn't think I'd eaten too much, it was just that the food was richer than I was used to, and that meant I felt fuller after eating it.

The corridor to my room was thankfully deserted. I didn't want to run into any of the other women if I didn't have to. They'd want to make small talk and I wasn't in the mood for any of that. We'd been given a free afternoon, though I expected that might change. But for now, I planned to make the most of it by taking the time to have a lie-down. It was far too easy to find myself exhausted by all the things I didn't normally have to do.

I slipped my key into the lock and twisted. It was nice to have a sealed off place of my own. At first, I'd thought the maids would be able to come and go at whim too, but they told me that was only the case for more permanent residents of the castle. A bleak reminder that no one thought I'd be here long.

But they were missing one crucial piece of information. I knew Archie. And he liked me. There was no way I was going home.

I might even spend the rest of my life living here.

The door gave way under my weight, and I stepped inside, only to slam it shut again. I didn't lock it behind me, as I didn't want to miss anyone coming and telling me it was time for the next test. If there was one thing I'd learned from being here already, it was that they liked to spring things on us. I slipped the key into my pocket, where it clinked against the one for my tower. I kept moving it from dress to dress, not wanting to leave it behind in case I lost it.

Not that I expected to be able to sneak back into it. Mother would return at some point today, tomorrow at the latest, and she'd discover I wasn't there any longer. Would she search for me? Most people would assume she would. But she hadn't shown me all that much affection over the years, so perhaps she wouldn't care.

I set the book I'd gotten from the library before lunch down on the bed, and leaned back to try and unlace the strings at the back of my dress. The maids didn't seem to understand that I needed to breathe when they did it up. Unable to get the right purchase on them, I gave up and flopped on the bed.

I pulled the book open and flicked to the page I'd marked. A drawing of a kitsune filled the page on the left, and I studied it to try and work out if it was the right kind. I knew next to nothing about the creatures, but after bonding with the one in the stables, I was desperate to learn more about them.
